CELEBRATE GOOD NEIGHBORS

MAYOR BIETER LAUNCHES NEW INITIATIVE TO CELEBRATE GOOD NEIGHBORS

Mayor David Bieter today announced the launch of a new initiative to highlight Boise’s vibrant neighborhoods and the residents who support them. Called “Boise Celebrates Good Neighbors,” the initiative joins existing events such as National Night Out with a series of new community activities designed to bring neighbors together and honor individuals who have made significant local contributions.

“Great neighborhoods are the cornerstones of a livable city. Boise is fortunate to have a thriving network of active neighborhoods in all parts of the city,” Mayor Bieter said. “I hope this new initiative will further strengthen the ties between Boise residents, establish new connections within our community and honor those residents who set an example of how good neighbors can improve and enhance our lives.”

The program begins with National Night Out on Tuesday, August 2, followed by a series of neighborhood block parties in August at the city’s three new community recreation centers; a Neighborhood Summit on September 10, where residents can learn strategies to improve their communities; and National Good Neighbor Day on September 28, when Mayor Bieter will present Good Neighbor Awards to individuals nominated by their fellow residents for outstanding service to their neighborhoods.

All Boise residents are encouraged to nominate neighbors who have gone out of their way to help those around them. To nominate a local citizen for a Good Neighbor Award, visit goodneighbors.cityofboise.org or contact Charlene Miller at (208) 570-6070. Nominations are due by September 11, 2011.

Bike Now Boise

From: Bike Now Boise <bikenowboise@gmail.com>

I’m writing to you to request your support for a project a group of Boise citizens started geared towards increasing bike commuters in Boise. This project began as part of the Boise Bicycle Project’s Pedal for the People event. The program works by setting up a mentor with a new bike commuter, and offering educational opportunities.

email contact information: bikenowboise@gmail.com

50 New Bike Commuters for Boise has the goal of getting 50 new commuters up and biking to and from work regularly! We are trying to help people who want to bike commute, could use some mentorship, and need some good advice.

We’ll do this through:

* provide a mentor for every new bike commuter

* organize workshops on choosing a bike, gear, etc.

* arrange meet and greets with other new bike commuters

* offer educational panels about the issues in transportation today
* create networking opportunities that will connect you to the resources to need to help our neighborhoods become better biking communities!

We have been providing individuals with this link to get started:
Get started here! This form will help us understand your needs and get you the best match possible!

Let me know if you have any questions, or would like to help, or if you can attend an event to help promote this idea!

Thanks!

ACHD Commissioners to consider a new Cost Share Ordinance

On Wednesday, June 22 at their 6 p.m. meeting, the ACHD Commissioners will consider a new Cost Share Ordinance that would give the Ada County Highway District the flexibility to work with individual cities to add things like landscaping, decorative street lighting and specialized colored pavements to future road projects.

Today, ACHD is limited by Idaho Law as to what it can add to a project – generally only those things that directly serve a transportation need.

The hearing will occur shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 in the ACHD Auditorium, 3775 Adams St., in Garden City. The Commission welcomes your participation. If you cannot attend the meeting in person, written comments can be sent to the projects@achdidaho.org or to ACHD Cost Share Ordinance, 3775 Adams St., Garden City, ID 83714.

To learn more about the proposed Cost Share Ordinance and to take a survey, visit http://www.achdidaho.org/Departments/PR/ACHD_cost_share_ordinance.aspx

Chances to comment on Boise City Budget

From the Mayors E-Memo 6/16/11

These are challenging economic times for all of us — families, businesses, governments. At the very moment when demand for many municipal services — parks, public safety, libraries, economic development — is rising, the resources we have to meet those demands are falling.

That’s the dilemma as we enter the City of Boise’s Fiscal Year 2012-2013 Budget process. Like families and businesses, we’ll need to make some tough choices. And we’ll need your help to do it.

The first opportunity comes next Tuesday evening, June 21, when the City Council and I accept public comment and answer questions about the budget at our regular weekly meeting. It begins at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers, third floor of City Hall.

We’ll get into more details during our three-day Budget Workshop, June 27 through 29. The City Council and I will hear reports from departments and provide direction on spending and program decisions. The workshop begins at 8:30 a.m. each day; it will be aired live on Treasure Valley Community Television CableOne Channel 98 and streamed online at www.cityofboise.org.

I’ll meet face-to-face with citizens regarding budget issues or any other aspect of city government at my next “Saturday Office Hours,” 9 a.m. to noon July 16 at City Hall. Visitors will be welcomed on a first-come basis and have up to 10 minutes each to meet with me.

Finally, the public hearing and vote on proposed user fee increases for 2012 will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 19; the final budget hearing will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16. Both meetings will be in the Council Chambers and will be aired and streamed live.

The Fiscal Year 2012-13 budget document will be available online on my homepage this Friday, June 17. Proposed fee changes and the proposed final budget will be available online the week prior to those hearings.

In addition to the opportunities detailed above, residents are always free to provide comment to the Mayor and Council via email at mayorandcouncil@cityofboise.org or via the Mayor’s Hotline at 208-384-4404.

Boise is a great city in part because we come together in tough times as well as good. I welcome your assistance as we get through the former and look ahead to the latter.

Until next time …

Six Greenbelt sections closed by high water

Information is forwarded by Joan Johnson, Neighborhood Planner with the City from Amy Stahl with Parks & Rec.

Six Greenbelt sections closed by high water

A section of the Greenbelt under Veterans Memorial Parkway has been closed because of damage caused by high flows on the Boise River. Flood waters are undercutting the river bank and causing the Greenbelt pavement to buckle and collapse.

Warning signs have been installed to prevent pedestrians from accessing the area, which is on the north side of the river.

Five sections of the Greenbelt have been closed because of high flows on the Boise River.

Areas that have been closed include:

• The tunnel on the south side East Parkcenter Bridge near Bown Crossing
• Loggers Creek footbridge from Leadville Avenue east to the West ParkCenter Bridge in Southeast Boise.
• The Bethine Church River Trail, a gravel section from the Cottonwoods Apartments on Riverstone Lane east to the powerline corridor near East Gossamer Lane in Southeast Boise.
• The Broadway Avenue underpass on the north side of the river near Boise State University.
• The Main Street tunnel on the north side of the river near Bernardine Quinn Riverside Park

For an updated list, please see:

http://www.cityofboise.org/Departments/Parks/News/2011/page64672.aspx

We have also posted the individual closures on our home page — in the righthand box under “Greenbelt closures.”

Thanks for checking in.
