ACHD community programs for the West Bench Neighborhood Association.

Thank you for your interest in ACHD community programs for the West Bench Neighborhood Association. The link to our community programs webpage is http://www.achdidaho.org/Community/Default.aspx and our planner responsible for community programs is Justin Lucas (387-6157). I?e also attached an electronic copy of our community program application for your convenience.

Currently, we have the following community program projects scheduled in the West Bench Neighborhood:
Goddard between Christine and Milwaukee: Install sidewalk on the south side of Goddard in 2014
Milwaukee between King and Wesley: Install sidewalk on the east side of Milwaukee in 2012

Additionally, we are in the early stages of looking at two other possible projects in the West Bench Neighborhood:
Cole between Kettering and Mountain View: We are looking at completing sidewalk on the west side of Cole Road.
Mountain View between Cole and Ustick: We are beginning concept work on a possible project to install some sort of pedestrian facility along this road. I know you had expressed interest in doing something along this roadway when we spoke, and we expect to have 2 public involvement meetings on this project. In the meantime, you can contact the project manager, Ryan Cutler at 387-6202 for additional information.
Please keep in mind that, as these projects are in very early stages, we have not yet made a determination of whether or not they are feasible to be built at this time.

Also, as I mentioned yesterday, ACHD works closely with Boise City and the school districts to identify needs for pedestrian facilities. As such, you may wish to get in touch with the school districts to coordinate:

NEIGHBORHOOD REINVESTMENT GRANT RECIPIENTS

Mayor David Bieter today joined with Boise neighborhood associations at the Borah Community Garden to announce the 2011 recipients of the City of Boise Neighborhood Reinvestment Grants program. This year Boise awarded $382,345 for 12 capital projects, plus an additional $13,898 for 9 “mini-grant” projects, for a total benefit to neighborhoods of$396,373.

“The Neighborhood Reinvestment Grant program is wonderful for neighborhoods because it allows their residents to decide from themselves what projects they want to undertake to improve and beautify their areas,” Mayor Bieter said. “This program not only makes Boise more livable, it puts the control in the hands of the neighborhoods where it belongs.”

 

The capital project grants are intended to fund physical improvements within neighborhoods that will enrich the lives of citizens, enhance the identity and quality of life and encourage a strong sense of community. This is the second year of the city’s mini-grant program, which provides neighborhood associations funding for non-capital projects under $2,000.

 

Projects that received funding this year include:

 

  • Somerset Park (Boise Heights Neighborhood Association) – Fund the first phase of development for the park by installing new infrastructure, turf and landscape. ($56,000)
  • Central Rim Signage (Central Rim Neighborhood Association) – Purchase and install signs to identify the Central Rim neighborhood. ($3,100)
  • Interurban Rail Station Signage (Collister Neighborhood Association) – Create new signage to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Boise’s Interurban Rail System. ($4,500)
  • Traffic Control Box Art (Downtown Boise Neighborhood Association) – Commission artists to decorate traffic boxes in the downtown area. ($13,275)
  • Warm Springs Historic Street Lights (East End Neighborhood Association) – Purchase and install ten additional historic streetlights along Warm Springs Avenue. Since 2006, the East End Neighborhood Association has used NRG funding to install 39 of 50 planned historic streetlights along the avenue, not including this year’s award. ($74,318)
  • Comba Park Community Garden (West Valley Neighborhood Association) – Create a quarter-acre community garden with off-street parking within the planned Comba Park property. ($59,700)
  • Peppermint Park Playground Equipment (Southwest Ada County Alliance) – Fund new playground equipment for 2- to 5-year-olds within Peppermint Park. ($65,000)
  • Denmark, Chile/Sunrise Rim Sidewalks (Sunrise Rim Neighborhood Association) – Install new sidewalks on selected streets within the neighborhood. ($52,000)
  • Interpretive Walking Trail Signs (Veterans Park Neighborhood Association) – Install 2.5 miles of historical and interpretive walking trails in the 30th Street Area. ($15,820)

Becoming a Neighborhood Watch (NW) “Team”

 

 

 

A Neighborhood Watch “Team” is simply a small group of interested neighbors (within an established NW group) who hold the same goals for their neighborhood.     They may meet monthly, quarterly, or twice yearly, and then as needs arise.   This team is comprised of the Block Chairman (my contact person and the leader for the NW group), Block Captains, and others who take responsibilities (such as planning National Night Out,  writing the neighborhood newsletter, etc.).    Developing this team brings together those in your neighborhood who have a variety of interests and talents.

Benefits of NW Teamwork:  Deeper friendships with neighbors  Shared responsibility for neighborhood  Increased support and safety  Improved communication  Prevention of crime

Spring Residential Cleanup Extended

Adding special collection days on April 12th and 15th for Yard Waste. Due to an extremely soggy and cold spring, Public Works and Allied Waste are adding two special collection days to give Boise resident’s additional help disposing of yard waste.

The extra collection days are Tuesday, April 12th and Friday, April 15th.

Set out extra yard waste in 20-32 gallon cans or paper leaf bags
Tree branches less than four feet long can be bundled and set out
All extra cans, leaf bags and bundled branches must weigh less than 60 pounds each
Plastic bags will not be collected
Residents must request a special pick-up by calling Allied Waste at 345-1266 or sending an email with your address to solidwaste@cityofboise.org. If residents call before noon on Monday April 11th, they will have a Tuesday pickup. All requests after Monday at noon will be collected on Friday, April 15th.

All items must be set out by 8:00 a.m. on the day of collection.

The 2011 Raft Along Program

The 2011 Raft Along Program will be held on Tuesday June 28th.  We will be taking 700 kids rafting. This is the 16th year we have run this program and we look forward to another successful year. The purpose of the program is to bring area kids and police officers together to break down barriers, and develop understanding by working together rafting.    The event is hosted by Cascade Raft Company, Inter West Transportation, First Student Bus Co., American Catering and Boise PAL. The kids are transported by bus to Cascade Raft Headquarters north of Horseshoe Bend on the Payette River. The kids are teamed with officers and a professional guide, given safety equipment and placed in rafts for the journey down river.   We float the calmer section of the river so it is safe for the kids. We have volunteer kayakers that float along with the rafts and act as safety boaters. The kids learn how to work together paddling the rafts to navigate the river safely.     Kids ages 8 to 16 are eligible to participate. Each child must fill out a rafting waiver form and have a parent or guardian sign the waiver form available at www.boisepal.org/RaftALong.html.  Pre-registration for all kids planning to float is mandatory! (Waiver form and additional information attached for your convenience.)  We recommend that you get your waivers in for each child who will be floating as soon as you can–these trips fill up FAST and we won’t be able to guarantee a spot to any late-comers.
