{"id":1730,"date":"2011-12-19T04:13:20","date_gmt":"2011-12-19T04:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wbnaboise.org\/?p=1730"},"modified":"2011-12-19T04:13:20","modified_gmt":"2011-12-19T04:13:20","slug":"personal-safety-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wbnaboise.org\/?p=1730","title":{"rendered":"Personal Safety Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kzIjSt977fk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>The Boise Police Crime Prevention unit has produced this brief introduction to some of the key personal safety measures we can take with us in our day to day lives and provided some additional information.\u00a0<strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div>We all like to feel safe and secure in our homes and activities. \u00a0\u00a0It is important to know that each of us is responsible for our own personal safety, and the best defense is prevention. \u00a0To reduce the likelihood of being targeted by criminals, we need to use common sense, as well as thinking and acting wisely and responsibly.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nBe aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts, and always have a plan. \u00a0Below are practical prevention measures that when used can improve personal safety in our homes, vehicles, and activities:<br \/>\n<strong>Prevention Measures:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Activity<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2022 Have a friend join you in your activities when you can<br \/>\n\u2022 Tell someone where you are going and approximately when you will return<br \/>\n\u2022 When you\u2019re out jogging or walking, leave your headsets at home<br \/>\n\u2022 ATM: choose one that is out in the open and well-lit<br \/>\n\u2022 Carry a cell phone at all times<br \/>\n<strong>Home<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2022 Use deadbolt locks on all outside doors and install locks on your windows<br \/>\n\u2022 Install wide angle peepholes on your front door or have a window to see the porch<br \/>\n\u2022 Don\u2019t open doors to someone you don\u2019t know and aren\u2019t expecting<br \/>\n\u2022 Trim shrubs to avoid providing hiding places, especially near doors and windows<br \/>\n\u2022 Install motion sensor or dusk-to-dawn lights outside your home<br \/>\n\u2022 Have a phone in your bedroom<br \/>\n<strong>At Night<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2022 Park in well-lit areas<br \/>\n\u2022 Walk to car with a friend or ask for a store escort if you feel uneasy<br \/>\n\u2022 Have correct key ready in your hand before getting to your car<br \/>\n\u2022 Quickly check from afar under the car and behind the seat<br \/>\n\u2022 If someone is loitering nearby, get assistance<br \/>\n<strong>As a Motorist<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2022 Drive with your vehicle doors locked<br \/>\n\u2022 Carry a cell phone<br \/>\n\u2022 In break-downs, stay in car with doors locked and call for assistance<br \/>\n\u2022 Being followed? \u00a0Call 911 with your location and stay on the line for further directions<br \/>\n<strong>Single Females<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2022 Be aware and alert of your surroundings<br \/>\n\u2022 Don\u2019t leave a social occasion with someone you just met or don\u2019t know well<br \/>\n\u2022 Avoid isolating yourself, by not jogging alone or being alone in a laundry room<br \/>\n\u2022 Know your limitations, make sure the messages you are sending to men are clear<br \/>\n\u2022 Be careful of personal information you post on social networking sites, such as when you are going on vacation, your address, where you work, etc<br \/>\n\u2022 On a first date or blind date, arrive separately and at a public place, if you feel threatened or uncomfortable, you can leave<br \/>\n\u2022 Install an automatic timer to a lamp inside, so it is well-lit when arriving home late<br \/>\nOptions if Confronted by an Attacker:<br \/>\n\u2022 Yelling transfers fear into anger, so yell and run away<br \/>\n\u2022 Pepper spray can be an affective tool, if used correctly and is ready when you need it. \u00a0Know the pros and cons of using pepper spray<br \/>\n\u2022 Consider taking a self-defense class<br \/>\n\u2022 Choosing weapons is a personal choice only you can determine;
