The Clubhouse Event Center | 7311 Potomac Dr. | Boise

4:30-5:30 p.m.  – Businesses | 5:30-7:30 p.m. – General public

The Ada County Highway District (ACHD), the City of Boise and the City of Meridian have been developing an access management plan to increase safety and reduce congestion along Fairview Avenue between Orchard Street in Boise and Linder Road  in Meridian.

The plan proposes:

–       Installing raised medians – currently scheduled for 2014

–       Consolidating driveways – occurs only through redevelopment

–           Requiring cross access – sharing access between properties and parking areas

–       U-turns

The open house is an opportunity for the public to view the specific changes proposed for Fairview, ask questions and provide input.

Should you be unable to attend this meeting but would like to submit written comments, please mail or e-mail your input to 3775 Adams St., Garden City, ID 83714 or to projects@achdidaho.org by September 28, 2011. For more information, please visitwww.achdidaho.org or contact Lisa Applebee, ACHD Project Manager, at 387-6239.

The Mayor’s eMemo

Dear WBNA:

Boise has always been a community that stands behind our military and their families — through the “Celebration of Thanks” event at the 2005 Humanitarian Bowl; through the “Our Troops, Our Families” program this year; and through the countless efforts and gestures of support from local businesses and individuals to our veterans every day.

For some of our returning troops, the transition home can be difficult, even traumatic. When internal turmoil leads to external conflict, police officers may be called to intervene — and the result can be difficult and dangerous.

That’s the challenge that led to Veterans Intercept, a new training program developed by the Boise Police Department. Police Chief Mike Masterson unveiled the program earlier this month at Gowen Field before an audience of more than 100 community leaders and veterans activists.

Veterans Intercept is designed to help police emergency responders to recognize if the individual involved is a veteran in crisis and, if possible, to use training to calm the situation and assist the veteran with finding critical support services.

A key contributor to the development of Veterans Intercept was Sgt. George Nickel, a decorated Iraqi war veteran who has struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Sgt. Nickel had a near-deadly encounter involving firearms with Boise police in 2009 but is now attending Boise State University, earning a degree in social work, and is active in the Idaho Veterans Networkcounseling other veterans.

The Boise Police Department are providing the Veterans Intercept training video toBoise area members of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI plans to market and distribute the video to police agencies nationwide.

I want to thank Sgt. Nickel for his service to our country and our community, and Chief Masterson and the Boise Police Department for their vision and leadership in addressing this important issue.

Until next time …

Arson at Public Parks

Recently two of our neighborhood parks in Boise suffered loss of playground equipment due to arson. The park near Mitchell and McMillan lost all of their equipment, and a park near Mitchell and Victory experienced partial loss due to arson.

We need the watchful eyes of you and your neighbors and your willingness to call police. Below are some tips:

1. Take time to walk through your park and spend time there. Have your cell phone available.
2. Report suspicious or criminal activity to police immediately – 911. Tell the dispatcher what you see, a description of the subject(s), and where they are located. Provide the dispatcher with your number for the officer to call back if necessary.
3. It is illegal to be in the park after dark, so if you see/hear someone, call police immediately. The non-emergency # is 377-6790 or call 911.
4. Don’t confront suspicious people and their activity; call police immediately.
