Local merchant donates to charity

Richard DeShazo, owner of  American V-Twin Motorcycles on Ustick Rd, has hand built a motorcycle to be raffled off June 6 at the Barry Reid Annual Memorial Charity Ride.  There are only 3000 tickets available and information on where to get the tickets is at BearRide.com.  Cost is only $10.00 per ticket.  All proceeds will go to MSTI Santa Bear Fund.

Way to go Richard.

Crime Prevention Unit Alert

1) The Idaho Meth Project has asked me to help get the word out about their “Paint The State Contest” for teens ages 13 – 18 yoa. This contest has cash prizes for the winners and is working to get the anti-meth message out throughout the state. Attached is the flyer with the information. Please pass this on to your neighbors, especially those with teenagers.

2) National Night Out is Tuesday, August 3rd. This year on August 3rd, we want to recognize those in your neighborhood, especially youth (of any age), who do good in their neighborhood. Do you know an individual who mows the lawn for someone ill (and doesn’t charge them), or helps neighbors in other ways? Do you know of someone who helps by planning, organizing or volunteering in neighborhood clean-ups, yard sales, or block parties? The good works are endless, so put on your observation cap and start looking for those who help out in your area, and I’ll send out nomination forms soon. It’s exciting to recognize those doing good in our own neighborhoods!!

3) Vehicle burglaries. Yes, they are increasing now that the weather is warming and it stays light later. There are several streets that have had an increase in vehicle burglaries (break-ins), but it is all over Boise that these are occurring. The majority of the burglaries are unlocked vehicles with property (purses, cash, Ipods, etc) left in them. Please send this to your neighbors and let’s remove our property, lock our vehicles, and not become a target for these criminals.

4) Please be aware and alert of door-to-door salesmen. We have a group going through Boise stating they are with “PDX Security Systems” and that they are affiliated with the Boise Police Dept. These two salesmen told a resident that crime has been increasing in this neighborhood and they were looking for a home to “sponsor” for a security system. The resident asked for the ID’s and any literature on their product. They didn’t have any written information. The resident told the men to leave and not come back.

Remember, all door-to-door salesmen must have a Boise City license to sell on their person. The Boise Police Department is not affiliated with any business, and there is not any specific neighborhood where crime is increasing at this time.

Be wise and safe. You don’t need to open your door to anyone you don’t know or are not expecting.

Thank you,

Charlene Miller

Spring Cleaning

Now that winter is in the rear view mirror, I am sure many of you and your neighbors are getting your yards ready for the spring and summer.

To help, the city of Boise is offering a free week of overflow trash collection. The “Spring Cleanup” as we have dubbed it is from April 26th-30th. Residents can dispose of larger amounts of trash from their clean up. Set out as much yard waste/trash in 20-32 gallon containers and paper leaf bags on your regular trash day from the 26th-30th. Please yard waste only and no more than 60-pounds in the paper bags. No overflow stickers are needed! (See attachment for more details.)

Now, before you send everything to the landfill as trash, “dig down” and look at your options. The attached newsletter also has more details on other options such as composting, household hazardous waste collection, large item pickup and more. Also attached is a list with resource information about where to donate reusable items, what to do with tires and more.

In addition, we know many of you already have neighborhood clean up events and this is a great opportunity for neighborhood associations to assist those residents who may have trouble keeping their properties clean (the elderly, disabled, etc.) by helping them dispose of unwanted items.

Please share this information with your neighbors and give me a call if you have any questions or need help. We look forward to assisting you in finding solutions that meet your needs, and keep your neighborhoods livable, friendly and vibrant.

Enjoy this nice weather and have a great spring!

Boise Police, are seeking your involvement

Here is an opportunity we, in Boise Police, are seeking your involvement:

1st ever Boise Police Service Week:

During the month of May, 2010, Boise City will proclaim “Police Service Week” the week of May 10th. Boise Police week coincides with two other important law enforcement events:  National Police Week in Washington DC, and locally, the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony (recognizing the service of officers who died in the line of duty).   The Boise Police Department is planning events to recognize and celebrate Police Week and we are seeking your participation.

If you know of an officer who has helped you and your neighborhood with any type of problem, from an individual response or case to a long term project, we’d like you to take a few minutes and write a brief article about the situation and what the officer did. We know there are officers out there helping solve neighborhood problems every day and we’re looking for a way to recognize and encourage neighborhood problem solving. With your help, we will honor these officers on behalf of your neighborhood at an event at Boise City Hall the week of May 10 – 14.  We’ll let you know when a time and date are set for the City Hall event if you would like to attend.

If you decide to write an article, please send it to me by April 20.

Thanks, in advance for helping recognize and honor those officers who work quietly but diligently to keep our Boise neighborhood’s safe, clean, and a wonderful place to live.

Thank you,

Charlene Miller

We are invited to Central Bench Neighborhood Association: 1st Annual Spring Festival!!

I hope some of you can attend some of the events.  I just noticed the RSVP request for some of the events.  I am sorry for the late notice.  I hope some of the rest of you can visit the website to read about the events, and maybe get ideas for our neighborhood association to use in the future.
